Weeks ago, Ethereum co-creator Vitalik Buterin made waves when he chided the “moonshot” immaturity in the cryptoverse, calling for the need to turn the space into a force for societal good. To that end, Buterin’s just put his money where his mouth is with a multi-million dollar donation to the anti-aging SENS Research Foundation.

Buterin: “I’ve Been a Fan”
Per a February 2nd press release, the non-profit SENS Research Foundation received ether totaling more than $2.4 million USD from Ethereum’s de facto posterboy, Vitalik Buterin.
The SENS Foundation itself was first founded back in 2009 by Dr. Aubrey de Grey, author of the popular work Ending Aging. The organization specifically strives to “research, develop, and promote comprehensive regenerative medicine solutions for the diseases of aging” — a field of study that was reportedly dear to the heart of Bitcoin legend Hal Finney.
“[Vitalik’s] support is critical to SENS Research Foundation’s expansion of our programs,” Foundation CEO Mike Kope said. “Our work to cure the diseases of aging is dependent on the generous support of our donors and we appreciate his support tremendously.”
For his part, Buterin commented he strongly supports the organization’s mission:
“I’ve been a fan of Aubrey’s work since I first read Ending Aging when I was a teenager, and I am happy to have been blessed with the opportunity to personally support SENS’s efforts. Their focus on creating solutions to the diseases of aging, one of the greatest problems facing humanity, is very much in line with my goal to positively impact the lives of millions of people around the world.”
Not SENS’ First Crypto Donation
SENS Research Foundation was already in the cryptoverse’s news cycles last December, when the recently started philanthropic Pineapple Fund donated $1 million USD in bitcoins to the non-profit.
Dr. Aubrey de Grey didn’t know who to thank exactly since the Pineapple Fund is ran anonymously, but he did call the donor a hero:

Now, if the price of bitcoin and ether do actually moonshot over the next few decades, perhaps humanity’s chances at existential longevity will moonshot in kind thanks to the SENS Research Foundations ability to fund further research.
