The Future of Bitcoin 2017 Series: Ryan X. Charles, Yours

How to monetize and profit from online content — the question’s been around for years. Ryan X. Charles says his new Bitcoin-based platform, Yours, can help creators make money at last.

Charles: ‘It’s Like Medium With a Pay Wall’

People spend a lot of time creating Internet content like articles, videos and GIFs, says Charlies. But most of the time they’re not earning anything for them — or not enough. Another problem is quality: sometimes it’s too hard to find the high quality stuff.

The internet was always intended to process micropayments, he said. But only Bitcoin makes it actually possible — with added payment channels. Yours proposes a format where a portion of an article appears with a button saying “pay to read entire article”. Users would pay small amounts, such as 10 cents.

Would readers still pay to read an article when there’s already so much for free, though? Charles says yes, but Yours is also experimenting with other revenue models. “There are so many other things you can do once you’ve got micropayments inside of a social app,” he says.

What are they? Watch the video and find out:

Ryan X. Charles has been a Bitcoiner since 2011, and is best known for being the world’s first (and only) “cryptocurrency engineer” at Reddit. When Reddit decided not to pursue that strategy, Charles went it alone.
